The "New" Bowery

Thursday night was pretty surreal, walking into the old CBGB's space, which after Hilly lost his lease in 2006, followed by a short stint at trying its hand at being a rock photo gallery space, became the newly converted John Varvatos Store in 2008.

Recently, they've started this "First Thursday's" music party, where our friends Doppelgänger were invited to kick off the beginning of the events.

I hadn't been back in the space since the last weekend before the big closing, so it was strange to see the somewhat "preserved" graffiti tags and punk rock decals peaking out from under the speaker displays and Gold & Platinum Record decorations, amongst the "clean new house smell" and nicely lit jewelry display cases turned into an "impromptu bar."

The show of course was crazy amazing. Having seen Doppelgänger make their start in the past couple of years, playing all the small L.E.S. and Brooklyn venues, it was pretty incredible to see the fully packed crowd in the old CBGB's space, matching the energy to the last time I saw a show there in 2006.

Needless to say, they are quickly moving up the ranks in the New York music world and have unequivocally set a new precedent for the "Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers" Lower East Side scene.
