Found Under the Sea...
ahem... I mean on the West Side of Manhattan.
Last night in my quest to meet up with an old friend who was visiting from Israel, I reluctantly left my beloved L.E.S. behind and made the trek over to SoHo. After many drinks and lots of merriment, with adventure on our minds, we wandered over to some seafood place on the West Side of the island, just off of Spring Street. I never actually caught the name of the joint because once arriving, I quickly had to make my way to find the WC.
While waiting in line for the restroom, I happened to glance over at this very boisterous table next to me. I was quite amused to see a stocky, tattooed man dressed in a navy blue and white sailor's shirt, whose head was adorned in a red knitted beanie hat.
Amidst the abundance of half drunken wine and cocktail glasses that were spread out on their table, I spotted this incredible crayon drawing of an old school deep sea diver scribbled out on the paper table cloth.
Considering that we were on the outskirts of SoHo, and more practically in Tribeca, where the yuppiest of the yup, yups live, I was amazed to suddenly feel like I had just crawled into some old world portside bar.
Never mind the kitchiness of the sailor get-up, (I knew that clearly the guy had to be wearing it as a joke, though admittedly, he pulled it off quite nicely) but that combined with the deep sea diver sketch and the genuinely warm merriment coming from this rather amusing group of people, combined with the coziness of the low ceilings and nautical decor in the back of this restaurant, my persistent desire to return to the Lower East Side as quickly as possible, instantly vanished.
After striking up a conversation with the folks at the table regarding the awesome drawing and more inquisitively why the guy, Laree Love, was dressed in said sailor deckwear, we quickly became friends and Laree insisted on giving me his drawing.
We got the waitress to seat my crew next to them and enjoyed a surprisingly informative banter ranging from subjects about Portland & Peaks Island, Maine, to L.A. vs New York to film making and art schools, to hanging out in DC, Richmond, the 9:30 Club, fake i.d.'s, Fugazi, Sparkle Horse, David Lowry and Cracker to Heavy Metal teenage kids to Gwar to Lamb of God to making hand bags out of recycled materials and even to talking about health care unions, all over a couple pints of Boddingtons.
Interestingly enough, Laree had managed to create yet another table cloth masterpiece, but this time to my impressed wonderment, it was of an octopus and an old school deep sea diver in an embrace!
Finally, after receiving a sundry of various text messages and missed calls from my other friends on the L.E.S. searching for me and beckoning me to the hood, it was time for me to say my goodbyes to my new friends, Chi-yoon, Laree and Katie and make my way back east.
While Chi-yoon made sure to point out her own illustrious rendition of a “work horse,” Laree insisted on giving me his second drawing of the octopus which I eagerly accepted.
After finally making my way back to Orchard Street, I was excited to hang up my new acquisitions in my apartment. While carefully considering the best place to show off these fine works, I finally settled on hanging them on what really was the only blank spot of this already very full, cozy 400 sq ft abode available.
Surprisingly enough, in it's own symbolic way, the refrigerator couldn't have been a more perfect spot for them.
