Vinyl baby!
I've been a longtime fan of Jm Airis even before I heard his first, first solo album"“Witch Killer.” Independently mixed, recorded and produced by Airis himself, his analog stripped down acoustics, slow, hollow, aching vocals and prophetic lyrics have haunted me in a way that makes me remember how lonely it feels to be an artist.
Now a full 5 piece band, Jm Airis has changed up the beat and written a new story with his album “Indian Summer” that moves beyond the pain and addresses the struggle full on in the face. Originally released on CD last March by Sector Five East Records, Jm Airis: Indian Summer has been picked up by Minneapolis based Totally Gross National Product and will be now released on Vinyl this month. While the album opens with a hauntingly, dramatic song “Let it Come,” the repetitious singular guitar note, sparse percussion and bass and intense atmospheric keys, set the tone for drama and consequence that is beautifully played out in the rest of the songs on the album.
Jm Airis: Indian Summer is set for Vinyl release next Friday, March 11, 2011 where they will be playing live at Turf Club in Minneapolis.

Jm Airis will be playing with Solid Gold, GAYNGS, Marijuana Death Squads, Megafaun, Doomtree, Slapping Purses, Leisure Birds, Har Mar Superstar, D.O.O.G., Alpha Consumer and Spyder Baybie Raw Dog & 2% Muck.

Indian Summer...Howell
Jm Airis and the Indian Summer played a set last night at Cameo sans Kloke who was getting his Californication on.
Luckily, in the close and "incestuous" understudy/impromptu world of incredible musician friends that we share, Kaan Howell was able to learn the songs in a mere, few, short days and fit in with the Indian Summer rather seamlessly. It made for a another fun and unforgettable night in Brooklyn indeed!

Jm Airis: Indian Summer - Let it come, sweet lord, let it come!
The first time I met Jon Airis seems like a lifetime ago already. It was back at the beginning of a summer when the New York, Lower East Side music scene was swarming with Mickey Rourke barfly wannabe rockstars and more importantly when several unknown bands such as The Cummies, Des Roar and The Yoko were just starting to declare war on those faux yuppie hipsters and define the kind of Rock music that has put the L.E.S. on the go-to music map today. That was 3 years ago.
Interestingly enough, in the middle of this music revolution, JM Airis, whose sound studio has served as the recording house for many of these up and coming bands, had begun working on a new project of sorts of his own. Quietly, or rather I should say, “off the radar,” this Northern-Wisconsin newcomer had begun writing and laying down various tracks of his own raw, acoustic and more notably, solo material.
Little did anyone in the LES/Brooklyn music scene know that this guy, most recognizably known for his fierce percussion talents in the Dead Sparrows, was no stranger to holding a guitar and being in front of a microphone. I got my first hint of Airis’s multi-talented brilliance when I was trying to write up a short review for one of his older rock and roll projects. Unbeknownst to me that Airis was anything more than just your standard, phenomenal drummer; I came across an acoustic recording of “Warehouse Empire” on some website, a song he had written in 2007 and had performed for a live internet radio show back in 2008. I was immediately blown away and lovesick all at the same time. I even posted it on my blog for an ex of mine to hear, just because I knew he'd love the style and would be able to relate to the lyrics in the song too.
Having been involved in several musical projects over the years ranging in styles from Rock and Roll, Retro, Grunge, Glam, Electronica and even Kid Pop Rock, JM Airis actually moves away from all the stereotypical music tag stigmas and sets out to redefine the solo artist as we typically know it. Not unlike the struggles so commonly heard in the albums of most singer/songwriter collections, the lyrics by JM Airis surpass those tried and true wailing diehard wannabes that are so appropriately tagged as “Emo.” What sets him apart as an artist is that somehow in the middle of his layered instrumentals, Airis' compositions supersede that stigma and introduces heartbreak, struggle and redemption that with his own rugged, industrial warehouse style, ring truer to the listener’s own emotions than one could ever put into words.
Straight from his own heart, JM Airis's work in Indian Summer seeks to define what it’s like to break out of the confines of a small town and deal with surviving in the big city alike. Perhaps most notably his lyrics in “Numbers Man” and “Divider” serve as a reminder of his small Mid-Western roots, setting precedence to what it’s like to struggle in love and in life and ultimately in the world beyond without all those pansy, pigeon hole definitions.
The amalgamation of Airis’s long, drawn out, acoustic, synthesized and rhythmic layers as set up in the album’s first introductory song, “Let it Come,” speak for itself and set a declaratory raw and honest precedent for the entire album. Ultimately, JM Airis is one artist whose talent and salient existence is one to be reckoned with.
Jm Airis: Indian Summer is set to headline tonight, Monday March 29th, 2010 at Fontana’s on the Lower East Side, marking the release of his first solo album, Indian Summer. Without a doubt, and I’m calling it now, tonight promises to introduce you to The Best Solo Album of 2010. “Let it come, sweet lord, let it come!”

Dead Sparrows “Into the Nettles” Record Release Party Tonight!!!
New York is a city that always has a bustle of talented and emerging artists that move to the area in hopes of finding their niche and making their big break. Hailing from the small Upper Mid-Western town of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Dead Sparrows (formerly known as The Cummies) exploded onto the Lower East Side three years ago and quickly set a new bar for the local underground music scene.
Not unlike the many other local bands who have regaled us with the kind of garage rock sounds that reminiscently take us back to our first high school keg parties, Dead Sparrows has managed to supersede Wikipedia's definition of "Garage Rock" and redefine it. After The Cummies’ initial NY release of their short EP [SF17] with Sector Five Records in the Fall of 2007, tonight finally marks the release of the much anticipated full length album by the Dead Sparrows, “Into the Nettles.”

Front man, Joey Sparrow has transformed those famed drunken growls with such a fervent air that instead of blending into the lost depths of the netherworld, has emerged with a sound that is completely his own. Combining forces with added lead guitarist, Graham Finn (an Irish legend in his own right), the Dead Sparrows' insane technical abilities play off their strengths as a band, claiming the hearts of everyone who listens to them.
It’s no surprise with JM Aris’s and Stevie Queens' “in the pocket” masterful synchronicity and Graham Finn’s rapaciously cunning moves, that upon the first beat of the first set, the crowd turns into a dancing frenzy. This is one show that you will not want to miss as the boys from Dead Sparrows are sure to make their own unequivocally infamous mark on New York’s Historic Rock and Roll Bowery Ave. tonight!
